Convert GIF to WebP Online

WebP supports animation just like GIF, but with vastly better compression — typical conversions cut animated GIF file sizes in half or better, often by 70–80%, with no perceptible quality difference.

Why convert GIF to WebP?

Animated GIFs are notoriously bloated. A typical reaction GIF can weigh 2–5 MB despite being only a few seconds long, because GIF's encoder can't exploit motion compensation or modern entropy coding. WebP, derived from VP8, applies real video-codec techniques to image animation, with dramatic results.

For static GIFs (single-frame logos, icons), the conversion gives you the same color and quality benefits as PNG (full color, smooth transparency) but with WebP's smaller file size. For animated GIFs, you keep the animation but pay a fraction of the bandwidth.

WebP animations are now supported by every major browser, so for web use cases there's essentially no compatibility downside to converting.

GIF to WebP — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GIF to WebP converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no signup, no credit card, no watermarks, and no file count limits. The full feature set is available without any account.

Are my GIF files private?

Yes. Files are stored in a private directory outside the web root, never shared with anyone, and deleted immediately after you download your ZIP.

How many GIF files can I convert at once?

Up to 20 GIF files per batch, with a maximum of 25 MB per file. There are no limits on the number of batches you can run.

Does the converted WebP keep the same image quality?

Quality is essentially indistinguishable from the GIF source at typical viewing sizes. WebP uses lossy compression, but the quality settings are tuned for high fidelity, so the conversion produces visually identical results for almost all images.

Will the WebP files work in Safari?

Yes. Safari has supported WebP since version 14.0 (released in 2020), and every other major browser has supported it for years. WebP is now safe to use as a primary web image format.
