Why convert GIF to PNG?
The GIF format dates from 1987 and has barely changed since. Its limitations — 256 colors per frame, 1-bit transparency — were perfectly reasonable in the era of dial-up modems and 256-color displays. They're downright primitive now.
PNG fixes both limits. The full-color mode supports 16.7 million colors with no banding, and the alpha channel allows arbitrary semi-transparent edges that compose cleanly against any background. For static images that started as GIFs (logos, icons, screenshots), PNG is a strict upgrade.
